川北輝による広島個展「Flow to Strange」をヱビデンギャラリー(広島県広島市)にて開催します。
【ステートメント】
見慣れた風景が、ふいに知らないもののように見えることがある。いつもの道、川の光、通り過ぎる人々。何かが大きく変わったわけではないのに、歩く速度や光の変化、心の状態によって、目の前の風景の意味は少しずつ変化していく。
私たちは日々、さまざまな流れの中にいる。人、都市、記憶、時間、そして感性の流れ。
本展「Flow to Strange」は、そうした流れの中でまだ言葉にならない感性がふとあらわれる瞬間を見つめる個展である。「Strange」は、目の前のものをどう感じ、どう意味づければ良いのかが、まだ定まっていない状態を指している。川北は、そうした感性のゆらぎを、作品の中で表現しようとしている。
展示では、龍、神社、手水舎、狛犬といった日本的なモチーフを出発点に、CGと3Dプリンターによる造形、サイアノタイプをはじめとする古典的な写真印刷技法、手作業による藍染など、新旧の技術を組み合わせている。古くから人々の祈りや畏れ、記憶と結びついてきたものを、現代のメディア技術を通して表現することで、伝統と現代、自然と人工、祈りとテクノロジーの間にある感性を探っている。
川北にとって広島は感性の原風景を形づくってきた場所である。川や海の美しい青の世界や平和について考える時間。それらは、明確な言葉になる以前に、身体の中に沈み込んできた感覚として残っている。
本展で扱う「Flow」や「Strange」もまた、こうした広島での経験と深く関わっている。流れていく日常の中に、ふとあらわれる違和感や余韻。その感覚を、作品を通してもう一度見つめ直すことが、本展の重要な軸である。

A familiar landscape can suddenly appear as something unknown: the path we always walk, the light reflected on the river, and the people passing by. Even when nothing has changed in any obvious way, the meaning of the landscape before us gradually shifts depending on the speed at which we walk, the changing light, and the state of our mind.
We live each day within various flows: the flow of people, the flow of the city, the flow of memory, the flow of time, and the flow of sensibility, or Kansei. This solo exhibition, “Flow to Strange”, focuses on moments when Kansei, which has not yet become words, quietly emerges within such flows. Here, “Strange” refers to a state in which one has not yet determined how to feel about, or give meaning to, what lies before them. Through these works, Kawakita seeks to express these subtle fluctuations of Kansei.
The exhibition begins with Japanese motifs such as dragons, shrines, chozuya, and komainu guardian dogs. It combines both old and new techniques, including forms created through CG and 3D printing, classical photographic printing methods such as cyanotype, and handmade indigo dyeing. By expressing motifs long associated with people’s prayers, awe, and memories through contemporary media technologies, Kawakita explores Kansei that exists between tradition and the present, nature and artifice, and prayer and technology.
For Kawakita, Hiroshima is a place that has shaped the formative landscape of his sensibility. The beautiful blue world of its rivers and sea, and the time spent thinking about peace, remain within him as sensations that settled into the body before they could become clear words.
The themes of “Flow” and “Strange” in this exhibition are deeply connected to these experiences in Hiroshima. Within the flow of everyday life, a sense of discomfort or lingering resonance may suddenly appear. To look again at that sensation through art is one of the central concerns of this exhibition.
